COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

COURSES REQUIRED FOR CERTIFICATION

Theory Course (Certification Part 1 of 2): 

Theoretical training based on the CAN/CSA Z614 Children’s Playground Equipment and Surfacing Standards.

Course objective: to learn and understand the technical requirements contained within the CSA Standards Document.

  

This course will help you:

• understand the CAN/CSA Z614 Standards
• identify hazards and equipment not in compliance with CSA Standards
• understand inspection requirements and process
• manage risk and reduce liability

Who should take this course: owner/operators, health inspectors, daycare staff, maintenance/public works staff for schools, municipalities, housing complexes and other areas that contain public playspaces, private inspectors and contractors, manufacturers, installers, parks staff, insurance agents etc.

The Theory Course is only currently available online. The Theory Course is a pre-requisite to the Practical Course

Practical Course (Certification Part 2 of 2):

Practical, training on applying the CAN/CSA Z614 Children’s Playspaces and Equipment Standards and how to perform an audit.

Course objective: to gain an understanding of the application of the CSA Standards and be able to evaluate compliance of playspaces and equipment.

  

This course will help you:

• take into consideration factors that affect playground safety beyond the CSA Standards
• evaluate existing play structures for compliance with the CSA standards
• complete a written inspection report
• provide recommendations for upgrading equipment to comply with the CSA standards with the understanding of safety and cost implications
• identify and implement an effective inspection and maintenance program

Who should take this course: owner/operators, health inspectors, daycare staff, maintenance/public works staff for schools, municipalities, housing complexes and other areas that contain public playspaces, private inspectors and contractors, manufacturers, installers, parks staff, insurance agents etc.

Participants must have previously taken, or be registered to take a Theory Course, before they can register for the Practical Course. The Practical Course is only currently available in a webinar format. RE-CERTIFICATION

Online Recertification Exam:

An online recertification exam available to those who need to recertify their CPRA Canadian Certified Playground Inspector Certification and who have already completed both the Theory course and the Practical course.

Online Recertification Exam Preparation Course:

This online course is designed to help participants brush up their playground safety knowledge before writing the Online Recertification Exam.  Evidence shows participants who take this course have a high degree of success on the Recertification Exam.

NON-CERTIFICATION COURSES

Managing Safe Playspaces  (Non-Certification Course):

The Managing Safe Playspaces course is an all new course that takes the best of CPSI's previous Basic and Inspection and Maintenance courses and enhances them with newly developed content including video. The course was developed under the Canada wide "Active and Safe Injury Prevention Initiative: Safe Playspaces Project". For more information on this project - click here.

Course objective: after successfully completing this Managing Safe Playspaces course you will have learned:

  • To understand the basic playground standards process in Canada
  • To understand the causes of significant injuries that occur on playground equipment in Canada
  • How we can inspect and maintain equipment to be free of these hazards
  • What play opportunities are appropriate or inappropriate for children in various age groups
  • To understand the basics of risk management and record keeping

Who should take this course: Anyone who is required to manage a playspace or multiple playspaces, maintenance staff for daycares, custodians, public works staff, private contractors, owner/operators, superintendents (schools, apartment complexes and additional facilities with public playspaces). This has been designed for participants in remote location who may not have the ability to attend our classroom courses.

Accessibility Course (Non-Certification Course):

Training based on Annex H from the CAN/CSA Z614:20 Children’s Playground Equipment and Surfacing and the American Disabilities Act.

Course objective: to learn and understand the technical requirements of designing, installing, inspecting and maintaining an accessible playspace for special needs users.

This course will help you:
• Understand why accessible playspaces are important
• Cost differences of operating an accessible versus traditional playspace
• Learn how to design, install, inspect and maintain an accessible playspace
• Understand the rationale and intent of Annex H from CAN/CSA Z614
• Discuss common design mistakes and understanding play value
• Understand the requirements for above ground and ground level play components
• Understand the Annex H specifications for:

o Acceptable types of protective surfacing
o Accessible routes
o Transfer systems
o Ramps and slopes
o Changes in elevation


Who should take this course: owner/operators of playground equipment, park designers, landscape architects, health inspectors, maintenance staff/public works staff for schools and municipalities, private inspection firms, play equipment manufacturers and sales representatives, etc.
